About the School
King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School is a place where tradition and ambition go hand in hand. Founded over 160 years ago, we are proud to be Birmingham’s oldest surviving selective school, but we believe our history is only meaningful because of the future it inspires.
As a selective grammar school for boys aged 11–16, with a thriving co-educational Sixth Form, we are united by a simple belief: education has the power to transform lives. Our role is not only to help young people achieve outstanding academic success, but to inspire a lifelong love of learning and develop the knowledge, character and confidence to make a positive difference in the world.
Everything we do is guided by our CARES values of Community, Aspiration, Respect, Endeavour and Service. They shape our culture, influence our decisions and define the expectations we have of ourselves and one another. At Handsworth Grammar School, we believe success is measured not only by what our students achieve, but by the people they become. Our ambition is for every student to leave us as a knowledgeable, compassionate and ambitious young person, equipped with the confidence and integrity to make a positive contribution to society.
Our students come from across Birmingham and the surrounding area, bringing with them a rich diversity of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. They are curious, hardworking and considerate young people who contribute enormously to the life of our school. Together with our dedicated staff and supportive families, they create a community where every individual is known, valued, cared for and encouraged to flourish.
While we are proud of our academic outcomes, we believe that an exceptional education extends far beyond the classroom. Through outstanding teaching, exceptional pastoral care and a wealth of opportunities in sport, music, the arts, leadership and service, we encourage every student to discover new passions, embrace challenge and fulfil their potential.
For generations, Handsworth Grammar School has prepared young people for the future. Today, we continue that tradition with the same unwavering commitment: helping every student to excel academically, grow in character and leave our school ready to lead lives of purpose, integrity and service.
