Support & Bursary

Support

Each Sixth Form student will join a tutor group of about 26 students. Having a tutor group system with a morning registration of 20 minutes allows students to get to know their form tutor very well over the course of the Sixth Form years and the form tutor is usually the first point of contact should problems occur. The tutor oversees a student’s development throughout the Sixth Form and plays a significant part in helping to assess progress. The form tutor has an important role in writing the references for UCAS applications to university and in giving careers advice as well as giving guidance in pastoral and academic matters.

Three staff monitor the academic and general welfare of students in the Sixth Form. Students also receive career advice and support with the UCAS application process which begins in the summer term of year 12. This involves students attending local universities, the higher education conventions, and listening to guest speakers who provide the most up to date information on applying for university both in the UK and abroad. It is vitally important that students choose their university course with great care and consideration, and considerable time is given by tutors in helping and advising students.

Independent careers and guidance is also available from the school’s careers advisor and appointments can be made to speak to that person if the student needs that advice.

We pride ourselves on the quality of pastoral care that we offer. Our staff are approachable, friendly and very experienced and we can guide students and parents through the two years of sixth form, so that ultimately the experience at Handsworth Grammar school is a successful and positive one.

Financial support

Our school is committed to supporting students from low income families. Indeed, this year (2024-25), we have committed to funding Free School Meals for Year 12 and 13 students who qualified for this support in Year 11. In addition, an enhanced 16 to 19 Bursary Fund is available for students to apply for. Please find further details about this here.

After reading the Bursary Policy, click here to log in to your Applicaa account to apply for the bursary.
