Year 13

Careers Guidance – Year 13

There is a wide variety of careers education and guidance.

Presentations to the whole year on specific occasions, namely:

  • at the start of the academic year to set the scene at which the focus is mainly on UCAS, although the needs of others are not forgotten;
  • in the New Year, a presentation is given on the arrangements for student loans and tuition fees;
  • towards the end of the academic year there is a presentation on the UCAS results process.

Presentations in Year 13 assemblies to inform students of such items as courses, candidate open days, access to funds to support post-16 students, Gap Year opportunities, sponsorships and employment possibilities.

Presentations to form tutor groups during registration periods to follow up announcements given in assemblies and to explain aspects of careers guidance.

Small group discussions held at various stages during Year 13 on such topics as gap year, scholarships, links with specific companies and organisations, requirements for specific courses and additional work experience needs. Once the UCAS application deadline has passed, students are prepared for interviews and to review their choices as offers are received.

One-to-one discussions held for a variety of reasons ranging from possible careers or university, to financial matters relating to post-18 education or employment.

Interviews (also assisted by colleagues) held once the student has completed the first three pages of the UCAS form. UCAS related ‘Mock Interviews’ are also arranged for all students gaining an interview.

Opportunities for students to obtain information are provided through the:

  • provision of a careers library;
  • provision of internet based resources;
  • organisation of  candidate open day visits;
  • provision of external speakers in response to demand;
  • support for work experience placements.

Students are given extensive ongoing support and guidance throughout the year, building on that provided in previous years. Also it is obligatory for any student contemplating a change of course to discuss the matter to make sure that the student is aware of the possible consequences.
